Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1 the teaching team work closely together to plan exciting and engaging lessons which develop the children’s independence.
We have 2 sessions of PE each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are very fortunate to have a specialist coach come into school to deliver a PE session. Please ensure that your child comes to school in their PE kit including trainers. If your child wears earrings these either need to be taken out before they come to school, or your child needs to bring micropore tape into school so their earrings can be covered. Long hair also needs to be tied back.
Children will bring a reading book home every Monday to share with you. This needs to be returned to school on the following Thursday. Please sign your child’s reading diary once they have read.
In Year 1 we have daily phonics sessions. These sessions support children to recognise sounds and apply this when segmenting for spelling and blending for reading. The children will also begin to read real and alien (nonsense) words ready for the statutory Phonics Screening Test in June 2020. We encourage you to read regularly with your child in order to support with the learning that is taking place in school.

Alongside our Maths learning we have a big focus on number bonds to 10. Number bonds to 10 are two numbers which add together to make 10. The children have thoroughly enjoyed singing along to our number bonds song. Once children are secure with number bonds to 10, they will then move onto learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
